When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Colossians 2:13-15
In this text, Paul is reminding the church that they have not always been saved. There was a time when they were “dead” in their sins. Rebellion may feel freeing and fun, but the reality is that resisting God goes against the very authority that holds the universe together. Our disobedience shows contempt for life.
It was while we were in that condition of depravity that God had compassion for us and showed us mercy by sending Jesus to die for our sins. Jesus is God’s provision for sinners to become his beloved children. Jesus went to the cross to forgive our sins, cancel the charges against us, pay our indebtedness, and free us from condemnation. Jesus made a way for all the wrong we have ever done to be taken away by “nailing it to the cross.” Jesus is that way. Jesus is your provision. Jesus is your only hope of salvation.
What is your condition? You are either in relationship to Jesus, or you are out of relationship with Jesus. If you are in relationship with Jesus, you are connected to Jesus and his life is your life. If you are not in relationship with Jesus, then you are “dead in your sins.” Friend, while you live it is not too late. Repent of your sins, turn to Jesus, trust Jesus for your salvation and follow him with your whole heart.
