Foolishness

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 1:18

The Bible teaches us the good news that God has given sinful mankind the gift of His Son so that we can be saved from the destruction our disobedience to God rightly deserves. Jesus said that He is “the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This does not keep many people from resisting the salvation that Jesus offers. Although Jesus has told us He is the only way to know God, so many people are frantically trying to find other ways, because they do not want to surrender to Jesus. Instead of worshiping God, sinners resent Him. When this world should be running to God, we see this world doing everything they can to rebel against Him. By resisting Jesus, countless people have chosen to believe in foolishness.

This Scripture clearly teaches us that those who have rejected the message of Jesus and His cross are perishing. They are already in the process of being destroyed by the very rebellion against God that they so tightly cling to. While some will hear the good news of Jesus, follow Him and through Him know God, others will reject this good news and choose a way of foolishness that leads to destruction.

Heavenly Father, please forgive us for our pride and insolence that has kept our hearts hard to the message of the cross. In Your mercy, humble us until we can hear the good news of Jesus and realize that it is the power of God that can save us. May we grow weary in our rebellion against You and see that life is so empty without You. Draw us to Yourself and give us the faith to believe and trust in Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
