First Baptist members take lifesaving training

What would you do, if someone you were with had a heart attack, stroke or choked on some food. Members of First Baptist Church of Walterboro asked that question and took action.

Members invited two registered nurses, Julie Mundell and Amy Long, to teach a class in Stroke Recognition, CPR, and Choking intervention. Mundell says, “I think it’s important because a lot of people aren’t educated on what the signs of a stroke or heart attack are. And with both of those, you know time is of the essence time can really change what your outcome is going to be with those illnesses. So, I think teaching people you know what to notice what to look for, and what to do in that situation is very important.”

Long adds, “Heart Attacks are not just for older people. A lot of it could be genetics. If you have heart disease, it runs in your family. Lately, we’ve seen a lot of young athletes having heart conditions. I wouldn’t necessarily say heart attacks. Just because you’re young doesn’t mean that you can’t have a cardiac event or stroke. We see a lot of young people having strokes, with the energy drinks and vaping putting extra stress on their bodies.

Anyone wanting more information on heart attack, stroke or choking and how to recognize and assist someone having an event go to the American Heart Association web site. In each of these emergencies, time and treatment is critical. Fast action can prevent permanent damage or even death.
