Colleton County Fire-Rescue responded to a 20-acre woods fire off Brittlebank Road, Wednesday afternoon, June 19th. A neighbor reported someone burning debris near the intersection of Brittlebank Road and Peurifoy Road. Dry conditions and light winds caused the fire to rapidly spread in a large, wooded area between Brittlebank Road, Peurifoy Road, and David Street threatening multiple homes and a small church. Fire-Rescue units arrived to find the fire threatening homes on Brittlebank Road and moving west toward David Street. Additional units were requested and two tractors from the Forestry Commission joined the firefighting effort. Firefighters were able to stop the spread of the flames within a few feet of several homes and the church on Peurifoy Rd. The Forestry tractors cutoff the fire before it reached the homes on David St. Crews were on the scene for five hours. No homes were damaged, but smoke was heavy in the area through the next morning.
