The Executive Director of Keep Walterboro Beautiful, Dana Cheney, received a Keep South Carolina Beautiful Affiliate Recognition Award at the South Carolina Litter Control Conference.

The conference was held on September 8, 2022 in Myrtle Beach.

Cheney and the dedicated volunteers of Keep Walterboro Beautiful do their part to create a pleasant city for residents by cleaning up litter throughout the community.

These efforts are achieved in part by organized litter pickup’s, such as the upcoming pickup day with USC Salkehatchie’s volleyball team on September 23.

Keep Walterboro Beautiful’s “Adopt a Street” program is also an integral part of the organization. Through this program, groups and individuals can elect to choose a street within the city limits that they will commit to tidying up on a monthly basis. This is a superb way for concerned citizens, students, Boy/Girl Scout Troops, sports teams, and so on, to give back to their community by removing litter from the city’s roadsides. Keep Walterboro Beautiful has gloves, trash bags, pickers, and safety vests available for use by volunteers.

Cheney pointed out that every citizen of Walterboro can do their part to make the city a place they can be proud to call “home” with small everyday measures.

“If you take your dog out for a walk in the morning or evening, take a bag with you. Or you know, if you go out running, take a litter bag with you and pick up trash,” Cheney explained. He calls it “plogging.”

This isn’t the first award Cheney has received at the conference. In March 2020 he was also presented with the Lower Region Leadership Award.
