The Order of the Palmetto was presented to Dr. Joe Flowers on Friday March 13th. The ceremony, held appropriately in Joe Flowers Park, was attended by the many friends, family, and public official that came out to celebrate and congratulate Dr. Flowers. The ceremony was hosted by County Council Chairman Scott Beiring, with the invocation given by Janice Blocker who also work diligently to have the state’s highest honor bestowed upon Dr. Flowers. Councilman Steve Murdaugh gave the keynote speech and the Proclamation was presented to Dr. Flowers by Representative Robby Robbins, standing in for Governor McMaster who was unable to attend the ceremony.
The Order of the Palmetto is South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, established in 1971 by Governor John C. West to recognize individuals for extraordinary lifetime achievement and service to the state. Awarded by the Governor, it honors natives or residents for statewide contributions, often honoring, but not limited to, civil service, leadership, and community dedication.
The event concluded with a reception at the Wildlife Center.
