Downton Abbey here in Walterboro!! The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society (CCHAPS) held its Twelfth Night Celebration, themed “An Evening at Downton Abbey” Saturday, January 10 in the Bedon-Lucas House at 205 Church Street! Flapper dresses, 1920s men’s wear, and even a bartender outfit were adorned by party goers! Dowager Countess Violet would have been proud to see local residents dressed in style! The celebration is hosted each year by the CCHAPS board to show their appreciation to the society’s members for their previous year’s support.
1920s revelers were treated to wonderful hors d’oeuvres, wine, and of course, tea. There was décor reminiscent of Downton Abbey, complete with the Crawley Coat of Arms! Congratulations to Emily Bridges for getting the most answers correct on the quotes guessing game.
A traditional King’s Cake with a bean baked inside was served. Whoever receives the bean in his or her piece of cake is declared King or Queen for the following year and will determine the theme for the next year’s celebration. Jacinda Ulm was the lucky bean recipient and was crowned Queen by the recipient from the previous year, King Charles Bridges. Everyone is excited to learn what theme Jacinda will choose for next year. Dana Cheney won “Most Creative Attire,” and Jacinda Ulm won “Best Expression of Theme.”
Many thanks to the CCHAPS board for sponsoring the event. Thanks also to the newly elected and re-elected Executive Committee: President Debi Gilliam; Vice-President Cara Young; Treasurer Rick Hawkins; Secretary Amanda Edwards; Directors John Hiott, Mandy Snipes, Angel Tucker, Barrett Ulm, and Cindy Warren. Historian will be Sarah Miller, and Christie Slocum will continue as CCHAPS Colleton Museum Liaison.
