October 29th The Cottageville Police Department arrested an individual who was wanted in The State of Colorado on a warrant for murder.
The arrest was made without incident by Corporal Moore of the CPD. Moore shared: “It was just supposed to be just another normal community policing morning. We are trying to make positive changes through the Cottageville Police Department, Chief Mitchell myself and we go around to the businesses, do property checks, walk through the stores, greet the residents and the customers to build that positive rapport. When I pulled up in the BP parking lot, I actually pulled up next to the vehicle that the suspect was in. I went into the store, came back outside, and smelled a strong odor of marijuana. The suspect came out of the out of the store and I identified him as the same individual that I saw sitting in the Tundra I had parked next to. He came out, we questioned him and detained him so we could further investigate the situation. We found out because we run everybody that we encounter we’re investigating through dispatch, and it came back the individual had warrant out of Colorado for homicide. Apparently, he had been on the run since 2023. We then arrested him formally and read him his Miranda rights all without incident.” The suspect was taken to the Colleton County Detention Center to await extradition.
Chief Mitchell commended Corporal Moore for her professionalism that “demonstrates the continued commitment to public safety and also Cottageville Police Department’s willingness to work with other law enforcement agencies across state lines.
Update:
Upon hearing from the pertinent law enforcement agencies in Colorado regarding the arrest, CPD was informed that there was an issue with the warrant that was put out occurring between the county and city law enforcement agencies in Colorado. Due to this issue, the suspect had to be released from the Colleton County Detention Center. The issue with the warrant has been rectified and Cottageville Police Department is currently looking for the suspect.
