The Colleton County Animal Shelter is not a “no kill” shelter.” However, they do everything they can to avoid euthanizing the animals in their care. However, now the shelter has reached an overcrowding level classified as “Code Red” which they have been operating at for 3 years. The state of overcrowding now has reached a level where euthanasia is an option for the first time in 5 years. Currently, the shelter houses 170 cats and over 100 dogs which is twice the number of animals the shelter can accommodate. CCAS has already had to euthanize some animals and more are scheduled. There are guidelines that are followed when considering an animal for euthanasia that stem from an assigned adoptability number. This number relates to the animals’ behavior and any health issues they may have.
Adopting, fostering, and/or volunteering is the most ideal way to save the lives of animals at CCAS.
Those who are want to foster can email fosters4ccas@gmail.com and volunteers can email volunteer4ccas@gmail.com to help at the shelter.
