The City of Walterboro has received a Municipal Achievement Award for its wastewater treatment plant expansion project. The city won in the 5,001 –10,000 population category.
The Municipal Association of SC initiated the Achievement Awards in 1987 to recognize and encourage innovations and excellence in local government.
Mayor Bill Young commenting on this award, said, “the expansion of the wastewater treatment facility has been a goal of mine going back to 2009. Working with City Council and our city manager, Jeff Molinari, we were able to make this goal a reality. All of us with the City of Walterboro are proud to receive this statewide recognition. This expansion project will allow the addition of new housing, new businesses, and new industrial development, creating jobs, expanding our tax base, and making Walterboro more attractive to developers and industrial prospects. This undertaking was made possible through a collaboration with Michelle Knight and the Lowcountry Council of Governments and the Federal Economic Development Administration. I would especially like to thank Wayne Crosby, the city’s utility director, who has overseen this 38-million-dollar project and who operates our plant. Wayne brings a great deal of expertise to our city”.
