Christians take the Bible seriously. In fact, we see the Word of God as authoritative in our lives. The Bible is God’s revelation of who he is, what he has done, how sinners can have a relationship with him, and what is right or wrong. The Bible clearly tells anyone who is willing to hear that God detests spiritual darkness.
Conversely, we don’t expect non-Christians to care about what the Bible says. We are not surprised when they celebrate, imitate, or approve of such God-forbidden practices. However, believers should be careful not to have anything to do with things God calls “detestable.” While this world revels in darkness, believers should ask themselves, “…what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14).
There is nothing wrong with enjoying candy, dressing up in light-hearted costumes, and having some fun that honors God. But a believer must draw the line between what honors God and what offends God. Christians who compromise with fear and darkness put themselves and their families in a spiritually dangerous and ambiguous position. I want to encourage parents who want to stand for Christ to firmly oppose any such celebration, imitation, or approval of darkness and fear in their homes or by their families. No doubt, such a stand will be difficult and met with protest, but standing for Christ is never the easiest option. Let your light shine in the darkness!
