Cemetery Holds its Quarterly Meeting

Posted

Live Oak Cemetery board held its quarterly meeting Tuesday September 25 at 5:30 PM in the small meeting room at the library.

After approval of the minutes and financial report, a discussion was had about recording of grave sites with the online software from CemSites. Originally, we were told only one login was available and it could not be used but by one person. After recent discussions it was discovered that the same login and password could be used by multiple users and additional training was available to us. Several of the board members agreed to take the training and help enter the data.

The cemetery is currently overgrown and looks unsightly. The owners of the individual plots are responsible for maintaining their own lot. The cemetery is responsible for the general trimming of the vegetation in the common area and roadway. It was determined that we would have our semi-annual cleaning at the end of November, and donations should be solicited from the community to help cover the cost of the cleaning.

Since the establishment of the cemetery in 1874, information on how to contact the heirs has been difficult to be kept current. Many of the families have died out or moved away. We plan to build up our contact list of the descendants and current owners of the lots. The community will be asked to help by providing information on who to contact for the current owners.

Future items to be discussed include – website, storage of records, and obtaining 501(c)13 designation from the IRS.

Community help is needed in maintaining the appearance of the cemetery.
