CCHAPS holds Preservation Awards Ceremony

In one of Walterboro’s most lovely and interesting homes, the Marvin House at 622 Wichman Street, on Thursday, October 9, the Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society (CCHAPS) held their annual Preservation Awards Ceremony honoring three homeowners and a community for lovingly restoring or preserving their homes and a church. Approximately 50 CCHAPS members and guests were in attendance. They were honored to have among their guests, House Representative Robby Robbins and his wife, Mary Bryce. The Society has held the ceremony since 1992 presenting 151 awards to homeowners, businesses, churches, and organizations throughout Colleton County. CCHAPS hopes to thank these individuals and organizations for taking on the monumental tasks of preserving our buildings, structures, sites, and homes for future generations.

The Preservation Awards Committee presented four well-deserved awards Thursday night to the following:

• The Collection County Historical and Preservation Society is honored to present the Colleton Rural Property Award to John Koger and the Koger House for its distinct historical value and interest to our community.

• It is with much appreciation and honor that The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society presents Alta Mae Marvin the Sir John Colleton Award for the Marvin House.

• It is with great pleasure that The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society presents the Colleton Community Award to Mayme Carter for Salem Methodist Church, recognizing this beautiful sanctuary of historical interest which is lovingly maintained and preserved by its members.

For their dedication to preserving this house in downtown Walterboro, it is with much pleasure that The Colleton County Historical and Preservation Society presents Scott and Katherine Harvin with the Simon Verdier Award.

The Preservation Awards Ceremony certainly serves as a tangible example of CCHAPS mission to promote, nurture, support, and protect the historical and cultural heritage of Walterboro, Colleton County, and its environs through programs of awareness, education, and preservation.
