The Airport Commission for the Lowcountry Regional Airport conducted a meeting in early January 8. Topics for discussion and review included an update on current projects that are underway.
The site prep work for the fuel farm site project has started and has been progressing for a couple of weeks. Bastion is the company who is handling the site prep. They will prepare the concrete pad, all the electrical components, and any site prep factors while waiting for the fabrication of the fuel farm tanks and pumps themselves.
Regarding the runway rehab project, contractors have been to the airport and are preparing to do a pre-construction survey on the runway, and they hope to mobilize in March on that project and begin work.
The airport is also involved in a project with the Forestry Commission. The forestry taxiway project is getting ready to have a notice to proceed issued clearing the way for the project to get underway in the next month. The property the Forestry Commission building is on backs up to the airport property. The Forestry Commission has aircraft that they use to help them fight fires, and they have access to the airport, and they have a taxiway that runs essentially from their property to the airport’s main taxiway. The taxi way they use is in need of refurbishing. The Forestry and State Aeronautics Commission have entered into a cooperative project with the airport to have the work done to rehabilitate that taxi way so that the Forestry Commission can have their aircraft access their hangers then access the airport so they can go out and help fight the forest fires. The contractor estimates it will probably take a week to complete once they begin.
The airport has been in its busy season since early November, and everything is running well.
There has also been changes with the Airport Commission members. Phillip Taylor was elected as the new chairman. Previously, Taylor has been the commission’s vice-chairman for many years. A new member from the city, Jimmy Syfrett has also joined the commission. Upon Bill Young’s retirement, Mayor James Broderick took his seat.
As for what is coming in the future for the airport, Manager Bert Duffie comments that once these major projects that have been in the works for some time are complete, the Commission will most likely monitor the completed projects and then evaluate where they are
