Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
A new year is upon us, and it is time for us to consider how we can improve the habits we have all developed. May I suggest that we live each
day with eternity in mind. As humans, we love to imagine that our strength will never fade, that our days will be very long, and that eternity is something that other people need to think about. This deception is foolish. Mankind has some glaring weaknesses. In our pride and arrogance, we tend to overestimate our strength and ability while simultaneously, underestimating our need for God.
Is it possible that we don’t want to consider the end of our life because we are uncomfortable with the idea of giving an account of what we have done with His
gift of life? If you are one of the few people who seek wisdom in this life, you understand that eternity cannot be ignored. “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
Maybe we don’t like thinking about the end of this life because we know that this wise perspective will influence our foolish preferences. How silly. Our selfish decisions only delay the inevitable and set us up for regret. No one gets out of this world alive. We might as well prepare ourselves for eternity.
It could be that you don’t like to think about the end of this life because you aren’t ready to face God. Friend, it is time to face the facts and make our hearts right with our Maker. Confess your rebellion against God, resistance to God, and wrongdoing in this life. Repent of your sins and turn toward God. Believe in Jesus and be saved.
