The Colleton Soil & Water Conservation District was delighted to present the 2026 Conservationist of the Year Award to Mr. David W. Barnes. Mr. Barnes was recognized for his dedication and commitment to Land Stewardship in Colleton County and preserving its Natural Resources.
Growing up on a farm in Colleton County David learned about farming and the care of animals from his Father. Thus began his love of the land that continues today. Farming is a family tradition that he continues to share with his brothers. He is proud to be a farmer.
Through the years, David Barnes has put conservation into action on their farmland by participating in various assistance programs with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) such as the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP).
He has enrolled over 2,000 acres towards numerous conservation efforts on their land. Some of those notable conservation efforts include, but are not limited to: Cover Crop, Pasture & Hay Planting, Precision Nutrient Management, Prescribed Burning, and Wildlife Habitat Planting.
David Barnes is a member of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation and a member of the Cattleman’s Association. He has also been an affiliate member of the Colleton Soil & Water Conservation District for many years.
