Walterborough: History of a Wichman Street Home

Posted

At a meeting of the Colleton County Historic and Preservation Society (CCHAPS), one the areas native sons gave a presentation close to his heart. Matthew Hiott presented his father’s book “Walterborough: History of a Wichman Street Home”. The book represents a well-loved and carefully cultivated dream of David W. Hiott, M.D. Dr. Hiott, who was native to Walterboro, loved the area so much that when it became time for him to start his medical practice he came back to Walterboro. Upon retiring from Walterboro Family Practice, Dr. Hiott spent his time studying genealogy, the history of Colleton County, and writing his book.

According to Matthew, “the book is all about the house that my family moved into in 1976 at 418 Wichman Street.  My father and mother researched the history for decades, and after retiring from Walterboro Family Practice, he went full-time on studying genealogy, the history of Colleton County, and writing what would become this book.” Upon receiving the news that he only had a short time to live due to his battle with cancer, Dr. Hiott made his book a priority. He and Matthew sat down and painstakingly went through the text word by word. A few months before Dr. Hiott passed away the book was finished with a promise made to publish the book and distribute it to local libraries.
