Unluck Earrings

Posted

I have never had a lot of luck with jewelry. I’m really rough on jewelry, constantly forgetting I am wearing a necklace, bracelet, earrings, or rings.

One time I was wearing a necklace that had three rows of beads. I was sitting at a desk and went to stand up when the necklace caught on a drawer handle and popped. Thousands of little beads went flying everywhere.

And that was just one episode.

But this time the earrings were the problem and they were just darn unlucky.

I say this because I lost them… and found them again 5 or 6 times.

On the 4th of July I had been outside with my grandchildren when I realized that one of the earrings was missing. We all searched everywhere but couldn’t find it. Disappointed, I couldn’t do anything else but pray and ask God to help me find that silly earring. The next day I went back outside and decided to look for the earring again. I went back to the lawn chair I was sitting in and checked the cushions. I listened to that little voice that told me to look between the cushion and the seat, and there it was!

The next week, I was driving down the highway and reached up to put my hair behind my ear. That’s when I noticed my earring was gone. The same earring.

I searched the car and luckily found it under the car seat.

On another occasion I was sitting in the recliner watching television when I reached up and discovered that same earring was missing. My husband and I searched together and found it under the recliner. I still have no idea how it got there!

Once, I went to church and when I arrived home, I realized one was missing. The next day I went back to church and searched the entire sanctuary. And there it was on the floor near my seat.

The next week I was walking through the house, glanced in the mirror, and discovered…. You guessed it, my earring was missing. The same unlucky earring.

Sighing, I retraced my steps the entire day, and walking outside, I scanned my driveway and walkway. And there it was. Gleaming in the sunlight on the sidewalk, and mocking me, daring me to try wearing it again.

But they were silver and matched my wedding rings. They were easy to put on and easier to take off. The only problem with them was that they were just unlucky!

Recently, my son who lives in Florida had to have surgery. He and his wife asked me to come down and help take care of the grandson during his recovery. At 2 1/2 years old, the boy is a handful. So I agreed, packed my bags, and caught a flight the day before his surgery.

Wearing that same pair of unlucky earrings, I traversed through the Charleston airport looking for a snack to eat on the plane. I get air sick unless I eat something before flying. So walking through the various markets that carry a wide assortment of snacks, I paused at a refrigerated stand that was well lit and hosted a variety of sandwiches, cheeses, and yogurts.

This oval stand was waist high with three shelves raised in tiers and had a 3 inch wide glass rim around the bottom to keep snacks from falling on the floor. Just inside the glass rim were tiny slits all the way around the entire stand that were primarily used to collect any condensation that dripped down.

As I leaned over to get a better look at a sandwich, I reached up to put my hair behind my ear. My finger then caught the earring which went flying through the air and landed….. You guessed it.

It went into one of the slits. Gasping, I leaned forward to try and see if there was a way to retrieve the earring. There wasn’t. It was gone. And this time, for good.

But you know what? I really wasn’t sad. I was actually glad. Those stupid earrings had been more trouble than they were worth. So with great joy I yanked off the other one, walked over to the nearest trash can, and threw it in.

“Goodbye, good riddance, glad you’re gone,” I said to the remaining earring in a snarky tone. But then I quickly looked around to see who had heard me. I didn’t want anyone in the airport to think I was a weirdo.

But then again, so many other weirdos there who would have noticed?
