A teenage male went missing while swimming on the Edisto River at Givhans Ferry State Park in Dorchester County Sunday afternoon 14-May. The State Park is located on the Colleton/Dorchester County line. Dorchester County Officials initially responded to the incident and requested mutual aid from Colleton County for a boat and rescue divers to assist with the search. Dorchester County responders and DNR were already on the scene. Colleton County Fire-Rescue assigned a boat, divers and several support staff to the incident. Personnel searched the river in poor weather conditions until dark. Responders remained on the scene during the night and the search was resumed Monday morning. The youth’s body was located under the black swift waters and recovered around midday Monday not far from where he was last seen. Dorchester County and DNR are handling the investigation. This is the second drowning incident to occur on this section of the Edisto River in the last week. The other occurrence involved a five year old girl at Mars Old Field Landing north of Givhans State Park.
