Stay Awake, Stay Aware, for the Life You Save Might Be Your Own!

This being Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, my message will briefly reflect these two issues that adversely affect so many lives daily. Two Scriptures that are so fitting for this message: Psalm 23:4 (KJV) “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me,” and Romans 8:37 (ESV) - “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” The second verse teaches that no matter what tests we experience in life, there is hope. Therefore, stay awake, stay aware, for the life you save might be your own!

One thing that Breast Cancer Awareness Month is designed to do is to let women and families know, who are suffering as a result of this dreadful disease, is that there is hope. Technology is so advanced now that there is no excuse for not knowing about the symptoms of this disease and the treatments that are available. When many women get the diagnosis, they fall into complete despair. We are human, so bad news such as this can bring about despair. This disease does not affect just the patient. It also affects the rest of the family and close friends. Something that you may or not be aware of is that men, though it is rare, can also have breast cancer. However, there is hope. Speak victory over your circumstances—and believe that God has given you “the win.”

October also focuses on Domestic Violence Awareness. This is a dreaded topic of discussion for so many because we are so quick to say, “That’s none of my business; I am not getting involved!” If you read your Bible, you will see several examples of domestic violence; however, the Bible does not encourage or support violence. It clearly states in Psalm 11:5: “The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.” One of the biggest problems as to why cannot get domestic violence under control is that the victims won’t speak up. They are afraid of their abusers, and they are ashamed to reach out and tell somebody in order to get some help. On a personal note, I am a survivor with a real testimony to share.

How can you help others who are grappling with these two issues? Share a random act of kindness with someone who is a breast cancer patient, a victim of domestic violence, a survivor, or his or her family. Always abound in the faith, and never leave home without Him!
