Search on for election workers

A busy election season in 2020 has the Colleton County Voter Registration and Election Office on the hunt for those interested in working the upcoming elections. Applicants have to be qualified registered voters or students who are 16-17 years old. In order to be considered to work the polls, applicants must complete a poll worker application, have a working telephone number, have reliable transportation, be able to work anywhere in the county, attend a training class, work a minimum of 13 hours on election day and have effective communication skills. Next year’s election season begins with the Statewide Democratic Presidential Preference Primary on Feb. 29. A total of 14 presidential candidates have filed to appear on the Democratic ballot. The state’s Republicans have cancelled their presidential preference primary. That election will be followed by the statewide Republican and Democratic primaries scheduled for June 9. Registered voters will have to declare to poll workers in which primary they wish to vote. If there is a runoff in either or both primaries, it will be held on June 23. The statewide General Election will end the election season on Nov. 3. In each of the elections, all of the county’s 32 precincts will be in operation. Voter Registration and Elections Director Angela Upchurch said new applicants who go through the training and are called on to work at one of the voting precincts will spend Election Day as poll managers. She anticipated requiring approximately 70 poll managers for the Democratic Presidential Preference Primary and then approximately 120 for the statewide primaries and General Election. Those interested in applying to work the elections can call the voter registration office at 843-549-2842, visit the office at 2471 Jefferies Highway in Walterboro or email the office at voterregistration@colletoncounty.org.
