Murdaugh filing in Colleton County deemed “Inappropriate”

Alex Murdaugh’s attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin have been mandated to file Murdaugh’s request for a new trial to the clerk of the Supreme Court of South Carolina. Donald Beatty, Supreme Court Chief Justice of South Carolina cited in his ruling Murdaugh’s defense team filed the motion for a new trial with the clerk of court of Colleton County October 27, 2023. Beatty further said, “Because [the] defendant’s motion for a new trial contains allegations related to the conduct of the Colleton County Clerk of Court, I find it would be inappropriate for documents in this case to be filed in Colleton County.” He then ordered the motion be filed with the clerk of the Supreme Court of South Carolina.

This order comes right before an evidentiary hearing to take place January 29 before retired Chief Justice Jean Toal. Toal was chosen to have sole jurisdiction over the evidentiary hearing to present evidence of jury tampering against Colleton County clerk of court Rebecca “Becky” Hill.
