The Colleton County Lady Cougars earned two wins and suffered a loss last week in advance of their Region VII-AAAA opener against Beaufort High School scheduled for Tuesday Jan. 14 (away). Colleton County earned wins over Swansea High School (46-34) and Whale Branch (32-25). They recorded a 41-30 loss against First Baptist.

In the road win over Swansea High School Tuesday Jan. 7, Omari Kirkland and Zy’Aire Johnson both scored 12 points. Other scoring included Jade Frazier 10, Makayla Chisolm 6, Ashley Bowman 4, and Ashley Savage 2.

“We probably played our best game of the year against Swansea,” said Coach Perry Smalls. “Kirkland, Chisolm and Savage really stepped up for us and led on the court.”

Against First Baptist at home Friday Jan. 10, the Lady Cougars trailed by one at the half before going cold late in the game. Ashley Bowman led Colleton County with 13 points. Other scoring included Kirkland 6, Chisolm 5, and Johnson 5.

“First Baptist is probably the best team on our schedule this season,” said Smalls. “We came out the second half and just couldn’t hit a basket. They had our number and made adjustments at halftime. They have great guards and were a very good team.”

In the road win over Whale Branch Saturday Jan. 11, the Lady Cougars were led by Kirkland who scored 11 points and Bowman chipped in 7 points. Other scoring included Frazier 4, Savage 4, Johnson 4 and Chisolm 2.

“It’s tough to play on back-to-back days,” said Coach Smalls. “We won, but we didn’t play at our best. We scored enough to get the win. On the bright side, we switched our defense up a little and the girls were able to make quick adjustments.”

Colleton County enters region competition sitting at 7-5 overall.
