Much anticipated, The African American Museum opened June 27 in Charleston on Gadsen Wharf in Charleston. The location of the museum is significant as it is the spot where Africans, taken from their homes for the slave trade were brought. The IAAM invites museum goers to “engage with history through transformative storytelling, remarkable artifacts and exhibitions, and a uniquely impactful power of place”. The museum endeavors to tell the story of trials and tribulations of Africans and African Americans and their perseverance to overcome. The museum offers this history through its permanent exhibits, Special Exhibitions Gallery rotating two to three exhibitions annually, and film and digital offerings. The new facility also features The African Ancestors Memorial Garden which is also available free to the general public. The garden is nestled under the museum itself and commerates the revered space. The museum is located at 14 Wharfside Street in Charleston.
