The Colleton County Citadel Club is sponsoring an Ivanhoe Creek Duck Race and BBQ Cook Off as a scholarship fundraiser.

Kicking off the Rice Festival on Friday, April 29, The Citadel Club will host the race and cook off from 4-7 p.m. at Ivanhoe Creek, in Walterboro. It is the best place for the race and cook off, across the street from Ivanhoe Family Cinemas.

For the BBQ Cook Off, there will be four person cook teams. All food must be harvested from the Lowcountry. Tickets will be sold to the crowd for samples of the food.

Awards will be given, but mostly for bragging rights. A blind judge with a committee made up of local personalities will judge the entries.

The highly anticipated Duck Race will begin with Rubber Ducks being sold for $20 per duck or three ducks for $50 before and during the event with a limited number of ducks sold. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place winners.

The ducks will “race” down a 50-100-yard creek run. The duck race will begin at 6:15 p.m.

Club member Lee Petrolowitz says that the club is planning on test racing a duck down the creek in the next couple of weeks. If the duck doesn’t race fast enough, they may have to consider putting a john boat with a small engine in the creek to help push the ducks along. The creek side will be taped off for safety concerns.

The Club always has insurance to cover accidents at its events.

The Veterans Victory House is hoping to bus some of the veterans to the creek side venue, and the event will be fun and exciting for everyone who attends.
