Woman dies in wreck

A 41-year-old Walterboro woman died in a single car high-speed wreck in the 4200 block of Green Pond Highway (S.C. Hwy. 303) at 10:05 a.m. on Christmas Eve.
The woman was driving a 2000 BMW traveling northbound when the car left the road in the rain. The car slid sideways, began to flip over before striking a power pole, roof first. The impact pushed the roof into the seats. The unrestrained driver suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was trapped in the wreckage.
A neighbor was in her yard, witnessed the crash and called 9-1-1. Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later, but Shawnya Mitchell-Sanders, 41, of Walterboro died at the scene. The coroner’s office responded and once they completed their investigation, firefighters used rescue tools to remove a portion of the roof and the driver’s door to free the victim.

The impact damaged the power pole and lines, knocking power out to approximately 1,800 Dominion Energy customers south of Walterboro, including the communities of Ritter, Green Pond and Bennetts Point. Dominion crews responded to the scene and quickly made repairs to the lines after the accident was cleared, restoring power within about three hours after the crash.
Green Pond Highway was closed in the area of the accident for four hours.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
