A Colleton County woman is in a Charleston-area hospital with critical injures received from being struck by a car while riding a lawnmower down a busy highway.

The woman was driving a small John Deere riding mower last Thursday at about 11:45 p.m. when a Toyota Tacoma came around a curve and struck the lawnmower. The accident occurred near Rivers Street in the 2200 block of Green Pond Highway.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma did not see the woman, since the lawnmower had no lights on it.

The driver of the lawnmower was thrown from the mower. Firefighter-paramedics arrived on scene and found the woman semi-conscious and lying in grass alongside the highway. She was transported to the trauma center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma was not injured in the crash.

However, a small dog that was sitting in the woman’s lap on the lawnmower died during the crash.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating this crash.
