May 20-21 there was a lemonade war at Bells Elementary. The event was based on the book “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies. The book is about a brother and sister who decide to have this competition to see who can raise the most money and bragging rights. Why? Older brother Evan Treski is less than pleased when he learns that his younger sister Jessie Treski is going to skip a grade in school and be in his grade the next school year. Evan fears his classmates may compare him to Jessie in an unfavorable way. Jessie, who has difficulty reading social cues, is puzzled by Evan’s not so great response. To hash it out they have a lemonade war. Whoever raises the most money in five days wins. The proceeds they make they are going to give to the local animal shelter.
Ms. Meagan McMillan, a 4th grade teacher at BES, read this book with her students and she and the class decided to have a lemonade war in the spirit of Evan and Jessie, boys vs. girls (minus all the questionable actions the siblings take against one another). It was fun to watch the different approaches each team took toward customers who came to the stands. The boys were outgoing in their approach engaging with customers first. The girls were more subdued but appeared to give more thought to how their stand looked and what they could offer the customer.
The boys were a bit ahead at the end of day one, but in the end the girls claimed victory by the narrow margin of $323.00 to $312.00. The ultimate winner though, was the Colleton County Animal Shelter who will receive a donation of $635.00 from “The Lemonade War”.
Congratulations on a great job to Ms. McMillan’s 4th grade class for a successful fundraising event!
