What You Do Is Never Unseen

Today read Exodus 1-3. The events in this chapter occurred well over 300 years after the events in Genesis 50. Moses was born into an Egyptian culture that feared his people because they were so numerous, and they worshipped only one God. Subsequently, Egypt enslaved them. In fact, their fear of the Jews was so great that the Pharaoh commanded that all newborn Hebrew boys were to be put to death when Moses was an infant. Moses’ mother had a plan to spare Moses and, as God worked it out, Moses was adopted by the Pharaoh’s daughter. He grew up as the grandson of the Pharoah, with his real mother as his nurse. She taught him about Yahweh, the one true God, and the history of their people.

But at age 40, knowing his Hebrew heritage, he did something that led to his exile. In 2:11-15, he saw an Egyptian beating one of the Hebrew men. Look closely at verse 12. “Looking all around and seeing no one, he struck the Egyptian dead and hid him in the sand.”

Is there a significant spiritual truth in that verse? Absolutely!

If you have to look around to be certain no one is watching, and/or you have to hide the results, then you probably shouldn’t be doing what you are thinking about doing. It is wrong and sinful.

Nothing you do is ever totally unseen. Even if no one else is around to see, God always sees.

If you’re ever considering some course of action, ask yourself some questions:

Is this something that I don’t mind God seeing?

Is this something that will please Him?

Is this something that I don’t mind others knowing?

Is this something that will strengthen my relationship with God?

Is this something that Jesus would do?

If the answers to any of these questions is ‘No,’ then back away from what you are contemplating. It could cause harm to yourself, others, your reputation, or your relationship with God.

In your journal, write about a time when you made a bad choice that went against God. How did you feel at the time and after, and what was the outcome? Was it worth it?

Pray: Father, help me to think, act, and speak in ways that honor You. May the Holy Spirit be quick to remind me that if I must look around to make sure no one else is looking, then I need to back away from what I’m thinking about doing. Help me to stay on the path that You have chosen for me.
