Playing for a packed house, the Warhawks were looking to extend their winning ways with a victory over Bethesda Academy of Savannah and get that all important first region win. They didn’t disappoint the large Homecoming crowd, defeating the Blazers 25-14.

The Warhawks stopped Bethesda on the Blazers’ first possession to force a punt. The team started their drive from the Blazers’ 47-yard line. It took the Warhawks just five plays to score on a 43-yard Cole Davis touchdown run. The extra point was good, making the score 7-0.

After a series of punts, Eli Rowe intercepted a Blazer pass at the 47 yard line. Again, Cole Davis scored a 32-yard touchdown run to make the score 13-0 with 11:47 left in the 2nd quarter.

Bethesda answered with a seven play touchdown drive, scoring on a 15-yard run. The two-point play was good, making the score 13-9 with 8:08 left in the half.

The Warhawks responded on their next possession with an eight play drive covering 65 yards, resulting in a two-yard touchdown run by Cole Davis. This brought the score to 19-8.

The Blazers cut the lead to 19-14 with 7:47 left in the game. Needing to run out the clock, the Warhawks got a 45 yard touchdown run from Cole Davis with 5:45 left on the game clock, effectively icing the game.

Offensively, the Warhawks had 271 yards of total offense, all of which was rushing. Cole Davis led the way with four touchdowns and 247 yards rushing on 29 attempts.

The Blazers were held to 214 yards of total offense, rushing for 96 yards and passing for 128 yards.

“I think this was a very big win for our program,” said head coach Greg Langdale. “We played a very good team tonight in Bethesda. I didn’t think we played our best game, but I was proud of the way the boys fought hard and were able to win an ugly game. I thought our offensive line did a really good job tonight controlling the line of scrimmage. They were able to open up some large running lanes for our backs.”

He continued, “Defensively we missed a lot of open field tackles tonight, but I thought we played hard and flew around to the ball. We got the kind of effort tonight it takes to win these types of games.”

The Warhawks will host Carolina Academy next week. “They are a good team that is playing some of their best football right now. Hopefully we will continue to play hard and give ourselves a chance for another win,” said Langdale of their upcoming opponent.

On Friday night the Warhawks will also recognize the 2002 state championship team.

The CPA middle school team defeated Pinewood 20-16 last Monday night. On Thursday night, CPA got a 20-yard touchdown run from quarterback Cale Owens with 4 seconds left in the game to defeat Dorchester Academy 12-8. The middle school record is now 6-1.
