War Hawks earn first wins of season

The Colleton Prep War Hawks improved to 3-8 overall following non-conference wins over Patrick Henry Academy (70-69), and Jefferson Davis Academy (67-57 and 71-28). The War Hawks lost their first Region IV-AA game of the season against John Paul II (63-43) Friday January 15 and Bethesda (66-57) Friday January 22. Colleton Prep is now 0-2 in Region IV-AA.  

Against Patrick Henry in the first win of the season, eighth-grader Melvin Teal had 14 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks. CJ Dixon was the leading scorer with 19 points. Other scoring included Naz Johnson 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks and Cole Davis with 2 points. 

“We had a well-balanced attack from our players,” said Coach Antwan Mitchell. “It was our first win over a good team. Dixon had an amazing steal and Johnson and Davis both played great defense. I am proud of our guys. We will only continue to get better.”

In a non-conference loss to Pinewood (71-58) Wednesday January 13, Teal was the leading scorer and recorded a double-double with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Naz Johnson added 19 points. Other scoring included CJ Dixon 9 and Cole Davis 1. 

“We played well, just not well enough to win,” said Mitchell. 

Teal recorded a triple double in the win over Jefferson Davis with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Dixon led scoring with 20 points and Johnson added 16 points. Other scoring included Zilas Johnson 5, Noah Catterton 3, Jeb Crews 2, Drew Rushton 2. 

“It was a great game played by these young fellows,” said Mitchell. 

In the loss to region opponent John Paul II, Teal scored 20 points and recorded 12 rebounds. Naz Johnson scored 10 points and had 3 rebounds and CJ Dixon had 8 points. Other scoring included Zilas Johnson 5, Noah Catterton 2, and Drew Rushton 1. 

CJ Dixon scored 24 points with 4 steals in the win over Jefferson Davis Academy Thursday, January 21. Naz Johnson added 15 points and Zilas Johnson scored 14 points. Other scoring included Teal 13 points (14 rebounds) and Rushton 3. 

The War Hawks were scheduled for a busy week beginning with a home game against Hilton Head Christian Tuesday January 26. They were scheduled to travel to Holly Hill Academy Wednesday before hosting Dorchester Academy Thursday. They will finish out their week with a road game against Thomas Heyward Academy Friday.
