The Colleton Prep War Hawk Wrestling team qualified for the SCISA AA State Playoffs and will travel to No. 1 ranked Hammond School in Columbia on Wednesday, February 3 for the opening round. Hammond School is currently 8-0 and are the returning AA SCISA Dual Champions.
The match will begin at 5:30 p.m.
“I know we will be outmanned against an experienced Hammond team comprised of upperclassman,” Colleton Prep War Hawk Wrestling Coach Packy Burke said on Monday evening. “Our goal is to gain experience wrestling with the best and making sure they remember the name Colleton Prep,” he said. “We will accomplish that by wrestling with intensity and control without giving up easy points.”
Colleton Prep split recent decisions with a loss to John Paul II (45-24), a loss to Cross High School (46-24) and a win over Edisto High School (48-36).
“We had beaten John Paul II earlier,” said Burke. “I decided to get some of our other guys matches for experience. With an unknown future and limited matches, I felt it was the best decision. All our wins came from forfeits. Keith Randolph 113, Riley Carelock 152, Steven Hunt 170, and Jack Sims 182 all recorded a forfeit win for the Warhawks.”
“Against Cross High School, Keith Randolph, a first year eighth-grader got us off to an exciting start at 113 and came back from behind to pin his opponent,” said Burke. “He showed a lot of resilience and determination to grind out a victory and get our home crowed really into our match. Soon after Carter Sims (126) who also started slow and was down early in the match came through when he scored an early third period reversal then tortured his opponent on top before eventually pinning him. At this point, the gym was blowing up with excitement because of the two eighth graders with no fear attitudes taking out sophomores. It was great for our sport. Eventually the crowd settled down as the match went on as it was evident that Cross had much more experience in their middle and heavy weight classes.”
“In the win over Cross High School, we gained some great experience,” said Burke. “Our teams’ weights didn’t match up great, but we made the best of it with a team willing to travel. Our numbers proved to be too much for them as we lost most of our match-ups but had the weight classes to fill the holes.”
