The Colleton Prep War Hawk middle school football team is off to an 0-2 start on the season after back-to-back losses against Hilton Head Christian (48-14) and John Paul II (43-36).

Against John Paul II Monday Sept. 22 at home, Golden Warriors scored first (two-point conversion) to take an 8-0 lead. CPA’s Walker Bryan then rushed for a touchdown (conversion failed) to make it 8-6. John Paul II answered and went up 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.

John Paul scored twice in the second quarter to lead 29-6 at the half.

In third quarter action, the Golden Warriors added another touchdown (two-point conversion) to go up 37-6. CPA’S Walker Bryan rushed for a touchdown (Carter Sims, two-point conversion) to make it 37-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Bryan had two rushing touchdowns early in the fourth quarter (Sims, two-point conversion) to put Colleton Prep back in the game trailing 37-28. John Paul answered making it 43-28. Sims rushed for a War Hawk touchdown (Bryan, two-point conversion) for a final of 43-36.

Walker Bryan (QB) led the team in rushing yards and scored four touchdowns. Sims scored a touchdown and two two-point conversions.

“The defense played outstanding in the second half, forcing three fumbles and recovering all three fumbles,” said coach Chase McRae. “I was very proud of our team. They played hard and fought back after getting down early in the game. I just wish we had a few more minutes because our boys were on a roll. I’m excited to see how we will compete the rest of this season.”

In the loss to Hilton Head Christian, the Eagles scored four times in the first half and once in the third to lead 34-0.

In the fourth quarter, Sims rushed for a Colleton Prep touchdown (Bryan, two-point conversion) to make it 34-8. The Eagles scored twice more in the final quarter and Colleton Prep’s Bryan rushed for a touchdown (conversion failed) for a final of 48-14.

“Carter Sims and Walker Bryan both ran hard and gained a lot of yards on offense,” said McRae. “Jack Broderick broke up two passes. Carter Sims, Cooper Hefner, and Conner Nettles made some great plays on defense.”

“This was a tough game,” said McRae. “Our offense did a lot of great things and was able to gain a bunch yards, but turnovers kept us out of the end zone. Defensively, we gave up several big plays that led to touchdowns. With that being said, we have a lot to work on at practice, but this team has a lot of potential. I’m excited to see this team grow and improve in the next couple of weeks.”
