Voter turnout needs to improve to make change

Posted

We encourage more residents to vote.

In the recent statewide primaries, the entire state of South Carolina averaged a 17.05 percent voter turnout, according to the S.C. Election Commission. About half of the counties in the Palmetto State had 10-20 percent voter turnout. Approximately 17 counties had a 20-30 percent turnout, with about four counties having a 30-40 percent voter turnout. The 30-40 percent range is the highest voter turnout in the entire state.

In Colleton County, the state election commission reports a 20.79 percent voter turnout. Of the 25,157 registered voters in Colleton County, only 5,230 ballots were cast in the recent primary.

These numbers are sad. They are concerning. It shows a lack of interest or concern about the issues facing our state and our local community.

Voting is a right. It is also a privilege. Moreover, in these times where political change is needed and social responses are large and overwhelming, we need leaders who can effectively maneuver in a conflicted climate. We need leaders locally. We need voices of reason and with local knowledge in larger, more powerful seats.

We implore our residents to vote in November and in the upcoming run-offs.

Voting is the way you are heard.
