For The Press and Standard

The magnificent Voorhees University Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (VU GEAR UP) scholars from Allendale, Barnwell, Calhoun, Chester, Colleton, Hampton, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg County schools were able to attend Carowinds for an extraordinary educational STEAM Quest day on March 29th, 2023! The students participated in an explosive combination of entertainment and education with science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics outside of the classroom. The students were extremely excited to learn and experiment with all the planned STEAM Quest activities that were set up for them! GEAR UP witnessed several students that boasted about how much fun the activities were and how they really enjoyed the Arts activity. This allowed the students to experiment with hand-made instruments. GEAR UP was pleasantly amused while watching the students engage in learning while singing and laughing at the same time. Not only were the students thrilled about riding the rides and playing the games, but they were also very vocal in saying that they learned something new. That is one of the many things that GEAR UP does, it opens the student’s eyes to new opportunities and learning experiences that will forever impact their lives. Having over two thousand students in attendance at this grand GEAR UP event eager and ready to learn was very impressive. This is not the first or the last of the many events that Voorhees University GEAR UP will have. If your child/children attends any of the above nine districts, please get them involved with the FREE program. Again, VU GEAR UP is ready and waiting to serve ALL current 7th and 8th grade students within Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Chester, Colleton, Hampton, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg County school districts.

Additional Background:

Voorhees University GEAR UP is such an amazing opportunity, it stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. It’s a federally funded seven-year grant designed to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education and career readiness. Voorhees University GEAR UP is currently serving nine school districts: Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Chester, Colleton, Hampton, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg County schools. As GEAR UP matriculates with the current 7th and 8th grade students, it is preparing them to be academically, socially, mentally and financially prepared to enter careers or colleges of their choice. It serves thousands of students by providing college tours, mentorship, counseling, tutoring, educational field trips and other activities to help students and their families gain as much knowledge about college and careers as possible. It’s so much more than just an opportunity, it’s a FREE tool that can be used to help provide knowledge in preparing students to be more successful in general.
