WALTERBORO: Ms. Sally Starr Tuten, 79, 0f Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Friday morning, February 21, 2025 at her residence under the care of Edisto Hospice with her family by her side. Born February 5, 1946, in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Patrick Henry Starr and the late Virginia Godwin Starr. Sally graduated from Walterboro High School in the class of 1964 and then Palmer Business College with additional studies at the College of Charleston in Art History. Early in her career, she was an administrative assistant for the vocational rehabilitation association, and was an event coordinator with the recreation commission. For many years she worked as a coordinator for the Colleton County Chamber of Commerce and the Colleton County Rice Festival Committee. Sally will always be remembered for her promotion of Lowcountry tourism, as well as historical events within Walterboro and Colleton County. She served as Adopt a Highway coordinator for Colleton County and also served on the Lowcountry Resort Islands and Tourism Commission. True to her Episcopalian faith , she was a member of St. Judes Church in Walterboro and also attended Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston. She is survived by her loving companion Bud Linder, by her son William Parker Tuten III (Dorcas), and by her daughter Virginia Godwin Tuten. There are two grandchildren she dearly loved, Agnes Penelope Tuten and Wiley Parker Tuten. She leaves behind her sister Martha S. Cobb (David) of West Columbia, three nephews, her special cousin Evy Ellis, and her faithful fur companions Misty and Minie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, William Parker Tuten Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be directed in her memory to the following: St. Jude’s Church, 907 Wichman Street, Walterboro, SC 29488, or to FoCCAS, 33 Poor Farm Road, Walterboro, SC 29488. The family would like to express their appreciation to Edisto Hospice for the excellent care and compassion shown to Sally during her illness and passing. Their professionalism will not be forgotten. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, February 24, 2025 at 2:00 at St. Jude’s Church in Walterboro, with burial following in the Live Oak Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 in Skardon Hall at the church. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, 117 Paul Street is in charge of arrangements.
