A popular adage, “Money can’t buy you happiness,” most definitely holds true, even until this day. Anything of intangible, moral value cannot be purchased; it must be earned. When the money runs out, then what will you do? If a woman were to marry a man solely because he is wealthy and their financial status changes for the worst just a few years into the marriage, what do you suppose will be the tenure of that union, especially without a reality check? Psalm 37:4 (ESV) says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Further, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore,” according to Psalm 16:11 (ESV). Therefore, trust Jesus to give you what you need to live happily and peaceably with yourselves and all men. While perusing Facebook recently, I found a posting entitled, “10 Awesome Things Money Cannot Buy.” As I list each one, I will share a Bible verse from the English Standard Version (ESV) to support the fact that your money cannot buy the attribute. Only your trust in Jesus to guide you will stand.  Manners: Ephesians 4:29: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”  Morals: Proverbs 11:3: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.”  Respect: I Peter 2:17: “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”  Character: Philippians 4:8-9: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”  Common Sense: Proverbs 2:6: “Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly.”  Trust: Psalm 56:3-4: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?”  Patience: Galatians 6:9: “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”  Class: Psalm 91:1-2: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”  Integrity: Proverbs 10:9: “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.”  Love: I John 4:7: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” Just as you cannot buy your way into Heaven, you cannot buy a life of worthy attributes that will bring peace and happiness. Just trust Jesus, and life will be so much better for you, even through the storms and the rain. “If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.” I pray that your New Year will be filled with more happiness and peace than you will have room enough to receive. Have a wonderfully blessed week, and never leave home without Him! (Anna Bright is a minister and educator in Walterboro. She can be reached at abrightcolumn@lowcountry.com)
