A deputy on routine patrol in the Canadys Community last week spotted smoke and alerted firefighters to a large woods fire that ultimately destroyed a nearby house.
On March 22nd, firefighters were called to investigate large pillars of smoke coming from behind a residence. Crews located a large woods fire: approximately 15 acres were on fire. The fire started from a debris pile that was left unattended, according to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy.
The fire spread, ultimately reaching a workshop and a covered shed. The S.C. Forestry Commission was called to assist. They sent tractors to the scene, and created a line to contain the fire. However, the workshop, all of the tools inside and a nearby house were all destroyed.
