Train engine catches fire

Posted

Fire-Rescue units were sent to Weiss and Blachem lanes for a CSX train engine on fire Monday Dec. 14 at 9:22 a.m.
There was a good bit of confusion from the callers to 9-1-1 as to what was actually on fire and the location of the train.
The engineer stopped the train so the burning engine was at the end of Balchem Lane, which was easily accessible for fire apparatus. The tracks, however, are located next to the Balchem Chemical Plant.
The first truck located the CSX engine and directed other responding units to the correct location.

Balchem evacuated the plant.
Firefighter-paramedics found heavy smoke coming from the second engine of the train. No train cars were endangered. Crews directed water to the vents around the top of the engine. The fire was extinguished within 10-15 minutes. Units were on the scene for nearly an hour, some of which were cooling the metal exterior.
The fire appeared to have started in a cooling fan near the top of the engine. Damage to the engine appeared to have been minor, but a CSX mechanic responded to the scene.
No one was injured during the incident and there was no damage to the Balchem Plant or products.
