Three teenage girls died in a head-on collision on Mt. Carmel Road at Smyly Road on Tuesday about 4:20 p.m.

A 2015 Hyundai was traveling on Mt. Carmel Road when the driver apparently lost control and hit an oncoming Freightliner truck head on. The truck driver drove off the road attempting to avoid the collision.

All three in the Hyundai died at the scene: Alexus Braxton, 19, of Lodge; Lauren Smith, 18, of Walterboro; and a 17-year-old, also of Walterboro. Deputy Colleton County Coroner Richard Carter said all died of multiple trauma.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The S.C. Highway Patrol and its MAIT team are investigating.

The road was closed until after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning.
