Three students from Colleton have been chosen as Standout Students at the University of South Carolina at Beaufort.

The local Standout Students are Shane Carey, Robert Dent, and Sarah Steen.

The Standout Student program at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) identifies high-performing students. The chosen students are selected by members of the USCB faculty. Those chosen are a part of an elite group who are given opportunities to expand their educational experiences.

“To select our standout students, we didn’t rely solely on grade point average,” said Dr. Kim Cavanagh, with USCB. “We were looking for a variety of things. Obviously, they excel in the classroom, but we also took into consideration things like enthusiasm, balance, and perhaps showing big improvement over the course of a semester.

“We also looked at students who are involved in many different aspects of the USCB community-student groups, academic organizations, community service, and more.”

USCB Chancellor Dr. Al M. Panu recently congratulated the selected students, and presented them with a list of internships, fellowships, and other nationally competitive opportunities selected with their academic fields of study in mind.

Panu said the university’s goal is to advance their future careers by giving them access to scholarships, internships, and other opportunities post-graduation.
