Three hurt in Hwy. 61 wreck

Three men were injured after two large trucks collided at the intersection of Augusta Highway (S.C. Hwy. 61) and Peirce Road Thursday Feb. 6 at 10:22 a.m.

Both trucks received heavy damage, going off each side of the road, hitting several trees and spilling approximately 50 gallons of diesel fuel on the road and into the ditches.

The driver of the larger two-piece Cheerwine beverage truck complained of minor injuries and did not wish to be transported to the hospital.

The two occupants of the appliance delivery truck both requested transport to the hospital. They were transported to Colleton Medical Center by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

The damaged trucks, debris and fuel in the road caused the highway to be blocked for three hours until the vehicles could be removed the fuel spill cleaned up. Firefighters and law enforcement detoured traffic to other routes during that time.

The S.C. Highway Patrol and State Transport Police are investigating the accident.
