The Heart and ‘Hustle’ of Mothers

Posted

Let’s take a moment and give God praise for the real MVPs of the house—the mothers! Mothers can pack lunches, break up sibling fights, quote Scriptures, and find missing shoes—all before 7:30 a.m. Mothers can pray Heaven down, but also aren’t afraid to snatch you back to Jesus with “that look”! Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. It’s a full-time ministry with no PTO, no 401k, and the “benefits package” includes cold coffee, mystery stains, and hugs that make it all worth it. That’s the heart and “hustle” of a mother, and I mean “hustle” in a positive way. “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” (Proverbs 31:28 ESV).

The Bible says in Proverbs 31:25 that she is “clothed with strength and dignity.” Some days she’s clothed in sweatpants and yesterday’s mascara, but she still has strength. Don’t be fooled; strength doesn’t always look like muscles. Sometimes it looks like a mother who didn’t give up when she could have walked away. I can write a book about not giving up on your children! A mother is a teacher, a nurse, a counselor, a referee, a chef, an Uber driver, and so much more, all rolled into one unpaid position. Even when she’s tired to the point of almost dropping to the floor, she shows up, still loves, and still prays. There is nothing like the power of a praying mother! Lord knows I miss mine.

Have you ever seen a real praying mama? Whew! A real praying mama doesn’t just ask; she declares. She will say, “Devil, get your filthy hands off my child!” She will anoint your head with oil so thick you will find yourself sliding in your sneakers! To the mothers who feel like giving up and feel as if nobody sees them: God says that you are blessed, you are chosen, and you are His. You may not hear applause, but Heaven is cheering you on.

For the women who mother without a title, those who are the spiritual mamas, the aunties, and the grandmothers, we see you too. You didn’t birth us, but you built us. So today, we rise up and call you blessed, with joy in our hearts and maybe a little side-eye, if you still make us eat vegetables! We thank God for your love, faith, fire, and fierce grace. You are not just a Proverbs 31 woman; you’re a Proverbs 31 warrior! Happy Mother’s Day, and never leave home without Him!
