The FEAR of the Lord

Posted

Are you reading the Bible through with me? Grab your pen and journal, and get ready to write your thoughts as you journey through the Bible.

Today we are in Deuteronomy 4-5. As you read these passages, underline or highlight these verses in chapter 4: verses 2, 9-10, 24, 29, 39-40, and chapter 5, verse 32.

What rich passages!

In chapter 5 we have reminders of the 10 Commandments, which is a conclusion to warnings given earlier in Chapter 4.

In chapter 4 the people are warned against worshiping idols. Moses warned the people that God is a consuming fire and a jealous God. He will not tolerate the sin of idolatry.

Moses reminds the people that Yahweh Himself wanted to teach His people to “fear” Him. While He loves us as His children, we need to be reminded that He has the great power to destroy and wreak vengeance.

These days we have lost that sense of awe, respect and reverence. We even sometimes sprinkle our language with disrespectful words relating to God and Jesus or even take His name in vain.

Many American Christians will show more respect to a preferred political figure or favorite celebrity than they do for the GOD of the universe. In our quest for a greater familiarity and closeness with God, we forget or reject His holiness majesty, and righteous judgment.

Do you have a healthy fear of the Lord God?

In your journal, list the ways that God shows His might and power in the world. Then list the ways His majesty is shown in your own life.

PRAY: Yahweh, the Eternal God, You are worthy of my praise and worship. You are holy and beyond my comprehension, yet You show me mercy, grace, and unconditional love. You are worthy of my obedience and submission. Lord, I stand in awe of You and pray that You would teach me so that I will always fear You with a healthy respect and submission. May my fear of the Lord be evident in my attitudes, thoughts, speech, and actions.
