Librarians from the Colleton County Memorial Library in Walterboro have some recommendations for a great reading experience for students and adults.

Colleton residents can also visit the library in person or online and explore the world of books.

Children’s book

A great book for ages 0 – 12 is “Mice on Ice”, by Ed Emberley. He has written over 50 books, and co-writes with his wife. Three of his best stories are “Drummer Hoff”, “Go Away, Big Green Monster”, and “Mice on Ice”.

“Mice on Ice” is about mice who skate on ice. As they skate, their blades leave lines that depict a cat. Magically, the cat appears, in color, and three-dimensional. What happens next? Why, the cat and the mice skate together!

“Island Queen”

Fiction by Vanessa Riley

Born into slavery on Montserrat, Doll bought her freedom and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel on the South American continent.

Doll rises above slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life: a restless shipping merchant, Joseph Thomas; a wealthy planter hiding a secret, John Coseveldt Cells; and a roguish naval captain who will later become King William IV of England.

“The Anthropocene Reviewed”

Non-Fiction by John Green

The Anthropocene is the current geological age, in which human activity has profoundly shaped the planet and its biodiversity. In this remarkable symphony of essays adapted and expanded from his groundbreaking podcast, John Green reviews different facets of the human-centered planet—from the QWERTY keyboard and Staphylococcus aureus to the Taco Bell breakfast menu—on a five-star scale.
