Two Colleton teenagers were seriously injured in a high-speed car crash that occurred on Robertson Boulevard on Sunday, July 11th.
One of the victims, who was critically injured, was originally found unconscious and laying in the road.
According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, fire-rescue crews were leaving Colleton Medical Center and were returning to their station at about 10:30 p.m. when they drove upon the unconscious girl, laying in Robertson Boulevard.
“As the crew was stopping to investigate, they noticed a heavily damaged vehicle in the parking lot of the Shopping Center and a male patient with multiple traumatic injuries near the parking lot,” said McRoy. “They requested a second Ambulance and the CARE Flight helicopter as they began treating both patients. Additional Fire-Rescue crews arrived to assist.”
The unidentified female patient was in critical condition, he said, and was “suffering from multiple traumatic injuries including head injuries.”
The helicopter was unable to fly due to poor weather conditions, so the teen was taken to Colleton Medical Center, where she was then transported by ambulance to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The 17-year-old male patient was also taken to the trauma center at MUSC.
Neither of the teens were wearing a seat belt, said McRoy.
According to information provided by Colleton County Fire-Rescue, the teens were in a Honda Accord headed north on Spruce Street when they did not stop at the stop sign on Robertson Boulevard.
The car struck the curb in the southbound side of Spruce St, began sliding sideways, and then crossed five lanes of Robertson Boulevard before striking a beam that held up the shopping center’s sign.
McRoy said the impact caused heavy damage to the car.
The 19-year-old female driver was ejected onto the highway.
The 17-year-old male passenger was able to exit the vehicle on his own.
A portion of Robertson Boulevard, near the 200-block of the roadway, closed for 4 hours while the S.C. Highway Patrol investigated the accident.
