A 19-year-old male received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand in what is believed to have been an accidental shooting at the Travelodge, 1577 Bells Hwy., Walterboro, on Wednesday Nov. 25 at 6:11 p.m.
Walterboro Police officers and Colleton County Sheriff’s deputies responded and cleared the scene. WPD officers said the man initially said he was shot while walking on Railroad Street by several men in a car. However, his girlfriend admitted to police that he was sitting at the table “messing with his gun and it went off,” the report said.
Officers found the bullet under the table underneath a hole in the table where the bullet had exited. The Smith and Wesson MP 9 gun and 10 rounds of ammunition were retrieved by officers and placed into evidence.
Colleton Fire-Rescue firefighter-paramedics found the patient ambulatory with bleeding to his hand.
He was treated at the scene, including bleeding control and pain medications, then transported to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center by ambulance.
The Walterboro Police Department is investigating the incident.
