A Colleton County child died in a recent car crash and his sister was also critically injured in the crash.

Brian DeLeon, 13, of Walterboro, died on Sunday, April 24th in a car crash on Ruffin Road, according to Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey.

DeLeon and his family were returning home from church when the crash occurred.

An 11-year-old girl was also critically injured in the crash. She was flown to the Trauma Center of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Her current condition is not known.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, the single-vehicle crash occurred about 1:04 p.m. when a 2010 Chevrolet truck dropped off of the right shoulder of the road and then the driver overcorrected. The truck flipped several times.

Two children – including the deceased – were ejected from the truck and the truck rolled on top of them. Neither of the children were wearing a seat belt, according to McRoy.

“Several motorists stopped to assist and they were able to lift the truck up enough to pull the girl from under the roof,” he said.

A third child in the vehicle did not require medical attention. The father and mother were also not seriously injured.

According to Master Trooper David Jones with the S.C. Highway Patrol, this crash remains under investigation by the highway patrol.
