A Colleton County teenager was critically injured in a two-vehicle wreck in the 4300 block of Jefferies Highway (U.S. Hwy. 15) just south of Winchester Road on Friday Jan. 8 at 4:48 p.m. He died Jan. 12.
Alex Sherrill, 19, was traveling southbound when his Nissan Maxima collided with the rear of a flatbed tractor trailer that was making a left turn. The Nissan received heavy damage and the unrestrained teen was trapped in the wreckage. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
Fire-Rescue units arrived minutes later and quickly used rescue tools to free the driver. He was unconscious and suffered multiple traumatic injuries.
No medical helicopters could fly due to poor weather conditions. Due to his condition, he was transported by ambulance to Colleton Medical Center to be stabilized. The Emergency Department staff worked diligently for an hour to stabilize the patient. A Fire-Rescue ambulance then transported him to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center. The C.A.R.E. Flight helicopter crew assisted with patient care during the transport.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
