The welding class at Thunderbolt Career Technology Center ended the 2020 school term by entering five students and one alternate from the senior welding class into a welding competition at Arclabs Welding School in Charleston. Competing were Hunter Fussell, Lettiecia Martinez, Christopher Robinson, Benjamin Thigpen, Le’Tay Washington, and Evan Wright.

These students held the top grades in the senior welding class and competed for a chance to win either a full tuition scholarship or a half tuition scholarship to Arclabs Welding School. For participating, all five competitors received a $500 scholarship.

During the competition, the students were each assigned an individual welding station along with a packet containing several pieces of steel and a diagram showing the measurements, cuts and welding that were required for the finished assignment.

All five competitors turned in a solid project within the three-hour time frame with a few students just under the top three spots.

“We look forward to the direction we are headed with Jerry Edens, who took over as the new welding instructor for the 2019-2020 school term. We hope to send another set of students to the competition next year and claim the top awards,” said Becky Fussell of TCTC.

TCTC strives to prepare Colleton County students to be college and career ready in the 21st century. In addition, to the welding technology program at TCTC, the school offers other programs in culinary arts, mechanical/architectural design, early childhood education, masonry, agriculture, building construction, pre-engineering, auto technology, and machine tool. CATE programs in health science and in business are supported at CCHS.

“TCTC is very proud of our welding students’ performance in the Arclabs competition and continues to support all of our students in achieving success,” Fussell said.
